Split (Aspalathos, named after a plant) – city on a peninsula dating back to the roman times. In the 3rd century when the great Gaius Aurelius Valerius Diocletianus, born in Salona near Split, decided to retire, he built an unique dual-function home. The building is a combination of a roman palace and a roman military camp. An ancient palace that has residents living inside of it at the present day. During our walking tour we have a stroll through the palace, Diocletian’s Palace is one of the best preserved palaces of the late ancient Roman Empire.The center city tour gives you an opportunity to create the vision of Split throughout the centuries. We meet at our Sirena office (Manuška poljana 18, as seen on the map bellow) where our guide will lead you to the Southern Gate where our Split walking tour begins, precisely in front of the city map with a short introduction to the history of the palace – city. Having entered the Palace, we will walk around the impressive Basement of the Diocletian’s palace through which we continue towards the Peristil where we encounter the entire luxury of the emperor – architect. There is his Mausoleum – the oldest Cathedral in the world, St. Domnius, the baptistery – the temple of Jupiter, Egyptian sphinges, Vestibul, than following the Cardo street we arrive to the Golden Gate and the bishop Grgur of Nin. St. Anthony the Abbot, father of Croatian literature as well as Voćni trg (the Fruit Square) are all waiting for us.
